Apple Fest Promises Old Fashioned Fun

The 2008 Apple Fest will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10:00 to 3:00 at Turner Farm, 829 W. Main, in Buena Vista, Colo. Buena Vista Heritage sponsors the event; free-will donations will be accepted at the entrance to the farm.

The festivities will include pickingapplefest2 and pressing apples, croquet, horseshoes, embroidery and sewing demonstrations, butter making, log sawing, children’s activities, pony rides and tours of the farm. Following the opening flag ceremony, entertainment will be provided by local musicians on the front porch of the farmhouse. Performers include Carole and Randy Barnes, Gene Farrar, Marilyn Miller and the BV Harmonizers.

Area residents are encouraged to enter the apple pie contest; pies must be at the farm by 10:15 a.m. to be eligible. Apples from the farm will be ready for picking the week prior to the festival. Barbecue sandwiches and drinks willapplefest3 be available for sale. The Turner Farm gift shop will offer handmade goods and apple-themed merchandise.

This event gives attendees an opportunity to remember a time when life was gentler and the entertainments simpler. Buena Vista Heritage, a nonprofit organization founded in 1974, acquired the Turner Farm in February 1997. Restoration of the property is in its final phase and has involved several hundred hours of volunteer labor, as well as private donations and grants from the Stateapplefest4 Historical Fund.

An historic cemetery tour will follow the Apple Fest at 3:00 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery on Rodeo Road. These tours, in which residents of the town’s past reappear to tell their stories, have been popular with locals and tourists alike this summer. Admission is $8.00 per person and benefits Buena Vista Heritage.

The final performance of the season for “The Madams of Central Colorado” takes place that evening at 7 p.m. at the Buena Vista Heritage Museum, 506 E. Main. Seating is limited. Tickets are $15 and available at the Buena Vista Chamber and the museum; BV Heritage members receive a discount.
