The town of Buena Vista is 129 years old this summer; not much of an anniversary to celebrate. But in 2004 BV marked its 125th anniversary with an event every single day of the summer. And it was out of that celebratory summer that the Summer Concert Series in Forest Square Park has grown.

Judy Hassell of the Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce was initially inspired by the vibrancy of the park concerts held in Carbondale and hoped to bring a similar event series to Buena Vista. Insurance logistics thwarted her efforts until 2004 when she determined that if the townGuitarMando recreation department sponsored the events, the liability would be taken care of. So it was that the summer concert series came to be.

Beginning on June 19th summer concerts will take place every Thursday through the summer at the Forest Square Park next to the Chamber of Commerce building off of Highway 24. On June 19th, Gallon Still will perform Blue Grass and Old Time style music for the diverse cross-section of Buena Vista that tends to show up. Then on June 26th Marvin Hass will perform cowboy poetry and Jim Hakanson will be dishing out Americana, folk and country tunes. With a “bring your own chair” policy, the summer concert series has a real grassroots, community-oriented feel.   For the cost of a donation to be split between the Recreation Department and the artists, you can expect great music, great company, and a beautiful park setting in which to spend your Thursday evening.
